Amazing: historical significance and great traditional pub era dining made a great pairing! Johan made some excellent suggestions. If you're a Fish and Chips person you are in for a treat! Batter is perfectly crisper and the cod is light and delicate! Is you roll salt & vinegar don't make the mistake I did ordering the truffle fries (what on earth was it thinking 😆)! It's jist a weird pallet.
Fraunces Tavern is an absolute must-visit! The food was next level—every single bite was incredible, and the historical atmosphere makes the whole experience even more special. Everything about our visit was top-notch. If you're looking for an unforgettable meal in a historic setting, this is the place to go!
(Long review) I recently visited Fraunces Tavern, and the building itself is absolutely beautiful. It’s full of history and has a fascinating story behind it, which made the experience unique. A big part of my visit was to celebrate my husband’s birthday. Unfortunately, the food did not meet my expectations, especially considering the prices. The dishes looked delicious when they arrived, but the food was literally as cold as the dining area. The flavor was lacking, and the temperature was a major disappointment. We ordered the mac and cheese, and the cheese wasn’t even melted, it was literally sitting on top of the dish. The service was okay. Our waitress seemed busy, but the restaurant and museum are located in a very busy area and appear to have a steady flow of customers, so that was understandable. We did finish our meals and didn’t complain at the time because we didn’t want to make an issue of it. The portions were generous, which was a positive. Overall, I’m glad I got to experience the historic atmosphere and see the restaurant/museum, but I wouldn’t return for the food. It’s definitely worth visiting for the history and the visuals, but my dining experience was disappointing.
This place was recommended to me by a professor at my university for the museum, but we also knew we had to have dinner at the restaurant for a birthday celebration. It was best atmosphere we could’ve asked for. I’m a huge history buff and really enjoyed learning of this place’s history and its past, even if just through decor or small signs. The food was great— best fish and chips my boyfriend had had, and the lobster and shrimp mac and cheese was delightful. The chocolate peanut butter cake was a great way to end off. We came back to the museum the following day which we also very much enjoyed.
There are multiple rooms for different purposes so it’s nice to hop around before and after dinner. Downstairs feels more like an old timey pub whereas the piano room upstairs more a lounge with live music. It’s actually pretty easy to walk in on weekend evenings so reservations aren’t really necessary. The host acted somewhat nonchalant at first until she realized we had a reservation for the piano room, which we made ten minutes prior while seated at the downstairs bar because there were so many spaces available. The service upstairs was definitely more pleasant. The chicken pot pie was delicious and the cocktails were good. The menus are mostly shared across the rooms but some have minor pp minimums (eg $30) so if you’re planning to grab dessert anyway then I’d suggest grabbing it upstairs.
