I wanted to visit this restaurant for a few years, 😁 now. The customer service was awesome, this my have been the best customer service I've ever experienced. The food was really good. It's a really relaxed and chill atmosphere. The music was really relaxing. We didn't stay for the show. But maybe next time. The decorations reminded of 1970s Wicker🫶🏾
I was in town for the weekend and stopped by The Sugar Bar to hear one of my favorite artists—and the moment I walked in, the atmosphere pulled me in. Having spent time in Kenya in the past, I couldn’t help but appreciate the space even more. The walls are layered with African-inspired décor and musical instruments, a straw canopy stretches over the full-length bar, and colorful masks frame the entryways. Warm orange light filters through sculpted red piping, giving the room a glow that feels both intimate and alive. Nearly everything has an organic, handcrafted feel—wooden chairs bound together, textured surfaces, and in the back, a cave-like nook carved into the wall where performers set up. It’s no surprise the music is what this place is known for—the setting makes it feel almost sacred. I wanted to love the food as much as the vibe, but it landed somewhere in the middle. Coming from the South, my expectations—especially for staples like cornbread—are admittedly high. And as someone who spends quite a bit of time at the smoker, I'm a tough critic. My colleague couldn’t stop talking about the fried red snapper, but my grilled pork chops didn’t quite deliver the level of excellence I was hoping for. Still, I’d absolutely return. Next time, I’ll come for the music, the ambiance, and the experience—and let the food be secondary.
I recently revisited my old favorite, The Sugar Bar, after a long time away, following a recommendation from a friend, and I am so glad I did. The food was outstanding. The Shrimp & Grits were seasoned perfectly, the catfish was excellently fried, and the Sugar Bar Breakfast was prepared exactly as requested. Additionally, the Mimosas, Bellinis, and Bloody Marys were fantastic. Most notably, the service provided by the server/bartender, Dominic was charming, attentive, and professional. He and the young lady at the coat check both provided exceptional customer service that truly stood out. The food is excellent, but the service is 100%. And kudos on the bathroom. I will certainly be recommending it to others.
We were the first customers of the day! Charles was such a cool waiter. He made our drinks, took our order and recommended a local cigar spot that go to. The food was great and the drinks were super good. We’ll have to come another time when the live music is on the calendar.
Highly recommend coming here during open mic night. Loved the vibes and staff were phenomenal. Bring cash - $2 mandatory coat check. Food and drinks were great as well. It's a tight space but they have a large seating area upstairs. Ordered fried catfish, lamb chops, snapper fish, fried shrimp, and salad. Not pictured - dessert.
