I went to the restaurant today and had such a lovely experience. It was beyond my expectations. I went with my girlfriend and it was so romantic. We really enjoyed the Tirokafteri and Jamon Serrano Croquetas. They were the perfect bite before the star of the show - the Venetian Sardines. We enjoyed Vasili’s family recipe and the story behind it. Toby - Tobias - was a phenomenal server. He was very kind, warm, and friendly and made my dinner with my girlfriend all the more hospitable. Lovely vino and amaro selection as well!
This place is really lovely!! Such a unique setting, I loved how it was underground and in a low lit setting. The food was also quite tasty. The spanakopita is a must order!! Delicious and the cheese melts in your mouth. The octopus had a great flavor. The lamb in the Tagine was a little overcooked but flavor was good. We do order a side of pita and they brought it randomly as we were waiting for the lamb, would have been nice to have it with our meal. We’ll be coming back :)
I had a lovely dinner with my parents here. The atmosphere was pretty unique with a maze like restaurant, alcoves and cozy intimate seating. The menu was great and food delicious! I think the tagine could have been slightly slower cooked, veggies felt ever so slightly overly firm, but the lamb was oh so perfect. All our other apps and were otherwise perfect! Great service, and again, perfect venue for an intimate dinner or date night!
Really cozy and intimate place, it’s perfect for 1st date or any date night. Book for a dining room, food is typical mediterranean but delicious.
Had dinner last night with a friend at Shalel on the Upper West Side. I was a bit apprehensive about coming here, given the reports of rude management and poor service from other reviews. We arrived at our reserved time and were told there were no tables available. I don't understand establishments that do that - if you have a reservation for a specified time, your table should be waiting for you, with a 15-minute grace period. We waited for 20 minutes at the entrance of the restaurant, pretty much in the way of waiters rushing by with food for other tables, while the hostess hummed and hawed on where to seat us. Her behaviour was odd, it was as if she was either new at her job and didn't know what to do, or she was extremely disorganized. (She should have suggested waiting at the bar with a drink on the house). 20 minutes after we arrived, we were seated at what was supposedly the "best table in the house". I wasn't overly impressed with the ambiance and atmosphere of Shalel - dark little alley-like corners to look like mini caves, with little / no light and dangerous uneven flooring. They should improve the lighting situation so no one falls. Our table was near a small waterfall-like pond filled with flower petals. We had a hard time reading what was on the menu, even with our iPhone light, it was hard to see. We had a very friendly waiter and this improved our mood. The food is ok - I would not really describe it as Mediterranean, it's more like Turkish or Moroccan. We shared 2 appetizers: artichoke fritters and dates wrapped in bacon - both were amazing! Our entrees were less exciting and we couldn't really see what we were eating - meat which covered a pile of rice with a spicy sauce. Mediocre at best. I would not return. The cave like dark atmosphere really made me uncomfortable, mostly because we were underground. Above us was an apartment building. It felt claustrophobic.
