First time dining at this restaurant. Lovely place and the food was delicious. Unfortunately, upon arriving the hostess, Lavonne, (not very welcoming) did not seat us when we asked about sitting in the front by the window. We sat ourselves. We then waited about 10 minutes and asked her about someone serving us. She told us to give them a minute and someone would be there. They were more concerned about tables filing up in the back room. Our, server, Julio, finally came by. We had asked for a glass of wine and olive oil. He forgot the oil. Waited another several minutes to get his attention. Never came by once to see if everything was fine. My friend and I were very disappointed with the service we received. I enjoyed the food but not sure if and when I’ll return.
Great service and food! Sure, tables are tight. Yes, waiting for a table is a pain...there's a reason this place is busy... fantastic food and service! Chicken+tuna burger+bread service+giant wine pours and attentive service is what keeps me coming back. Love this place!
I paid $32 for a tuna burger the size of a large egg. It was more of a slider than a burger really. A single bourbon sour on the rocks (in a short glass) was $25. And when I asked for the tuna leftovers to be packed to go (we had to leave suddenly), my “burger” was thrown haphazardly into a container, separated from its bun, and with neither of the two sauces that came with the meal. The food is good, but for the cost, the value is terrible. And please, when you’re being asked to pay those prices, you should at least get proper to-go service. It’s only respectful. I don’t know that I’ll be back.
I had dinner at Island on Madison Ave and it’s one of those classic NYC spots that quietly does everything right. The food was excellent across the board, fresh, well executed, and clearly made with quality ingredients. Nothing felt like an afterthought. What really stood out was the manager, present, polished, and clearly running a tight, well organized floor without making it feel stiff. You can tell the place is well led. Service overall was solid, though our waitress had that slightly rushed vibe and was squeezed into a sweater that didn’t quite fit, a little chaotic, but still got the job done. Overall, Island delivers great food, strong leadership, and an authentic Upper East Side dining experience without trying too hard.
