There are meals you enjoy, meals you remember, and then there are meals that fundamentally alter the way you think about food, art, hospitality, and culture. My experience at Saga belongs firmly in that last category. From the moment you step into the space, the atmosphere is immaculate. The decor is minimalist in the most intentional way, nothing distracts from the experience itself. Every detail feels curated: the lighting, the pacing, the skyline pouring through the windows, the music (which was COOL as hell), the movement of service. It felt cinematic without ever feeling performative. Luxurious without stiffness. Effortless in the way only true mastery can appear effortless. And the food? I honestly don’t even know how to describe what Chef Charlie Mitchell and his team are accomplishing there. Every bite was technically stunning, yes, but more importantly, it was emotionally recognizable. During the meal, I found myself identifying very specific flavor memories that felt deeply familiar to me as a Black woman. One seafood course immediately brought to mind a fish fry — and not just any fish fry, but specifically a Detroit fish fry, which I later learned was indeed part of the inspiration. Another dish contained collards and a broth beneath the seafood that I instantly recognized as pot liquor. Not “greens essence.” Not “vegetable broth.” Pot liquor. Living culinary memory. I was shocked to learn that many diners had not picked up on those references because to me they felt so beautifully, unapologetically present. That is what moved me most about this experience: the elevation of Black foodways without erasing their identity. This was fine dining that understood lineage. Chef Charlie’s work feels culturally fluent in a way I have rarely experienced in luxury dining spaces. There is deep technique here, but also deep humanity. You can feel history in the food. Migration. Family tables. Regional Black traditions. Resourcefulness transformed into artistry. It felt like witnessing Black culinary memory treated with the reverence usually reserved for European tradition. And I have to specifically acknowledge Amy, the sommelier, who was phenomenal. Seeing a Black woman operating with that level of excellence and authority in a space like this genuinely meant something to me. Her presence elevated the experience even further. She was warm, knowledgeable, confident, and absolutely belonged in that room. Carlos at the bar was equally incredible — charismatic, thoughtful, deeply skilled, and refreshingly himself. Not polished into blandness. Not culturally flattened. Just excellent hospitality with personality and soul intact. And Harris, our primary server, guided the evening with such care and grace that by the end of the meal, after I asked to leave a note for the chef, he took us into the kitchen to meet Chef Charlie himself. That moment honestly meant the world to me because I needed the team to know: some of us see exactly what they are doing there. What struck me emotionally was that this space felt profoundly Black in spirit, influence, flavor, rhythm, and cultural reference — and yet I was one of the only Black patrons in the dining room who wasn’t staff. More Black folks deserve to experience this level of Black excellence. Because this is not simply “a nice restaurant.” This is art. This is cultural storytelling. This is Black culinary tradition being honored, expanded, elevated, and placed unapologetically within the highest tier of fine dining in the world. I will think about this meal for years.

Just finished celebrating my birthday here last night and it was truly an incredible experience. The service is what I expect from a fine dining establishment. I observed that the staff are in lockstep of one another, ensuring they guide you from the time you step out of the elevator, to when you depart. I deeply appreciate the high level of professionalism, enthusiasm and steady energy we experienced from every person we came into contact with to make this dinner special. We participated in the 10 course menu and each bite was carefully thought out, layered in flavor, presentation and quality. You can tell the Chef sources his ingredients carefully as you can taste the quality in each bite. The ambiance is high end yet welcoming and the views are stunning. We had the Gimlet cocktail and when I tell you, it was one of the best cocktails I’ve had, it was incredible, clean and fragrant (perfect for Gin lovers. Thank you to Chef Mitchell and his incredible team for a beautiful experience 🫶🏽

A hidden gem!! Beautiful location, amazing hospitality. As soon as we got there we were greeted with a drink from the bar. The experience wasn’t rushed at all and the view is breathtaking. Everything we tasted was delicious but the deserts were another level of perfection! All the cocktails 100/10, shout out to Tony ! He’s such a gem !! We asked for a list of places to visit after saga since we wanted to experience night life in NYC and the server came through with a list of recommendations. Overall we had the best experience at Saga and will be back next time we are in NYC

Everything was exceptional—the food, service, and ambience. This is one of the few restaurants I’ve visited where I couldn’t find a single thing to criticize. The only minor thing to note was the madai tempura course, which was a bit too hot. I had to take it out after trying to eat just one bite. Shoutout to every server that day; they truly went out of their way to make my birthday special. Every course was carefully described, beautifully presented, and creative. I was especially impressed by the fluke and sawara courses—both were exceptionally well executed. Other favorites included the venison, the tea course, and the dessert course.
