The music here was wonderful—they played a full hour set with a lot of original tunes, which was definitely the highlight of the evening. We arrived around 6:00 PM, got a spot right up front, and had the place mostly to ourselves at first. We ordered a bottle of wine and some appetizers. I wouldn’t plan on having a full dinner here, but it’s perfect for drinks and small bites. The venue is in the basement of The Muse New York hotel (just walk into the lobby and head downstairs). It has a great, authentic NYC jazz club atmosphere.
Saw Mingus Big Band on a Monday night and they were fantastic. Maybe hard to notice on the street (we walked by it, lol), but a classy cool little venue with great sound. We arrived at 6:15 for the 7pm show and had our choice of seats.
Wonderful new jazz club in midtown. The finger food was wonderful and paired well with the drinks. The seating is very close to stage. Perfect candlelight date night. The ticket and food together is $90 for each person at a minimum.
Amazing new jazz spot in town -great music lineup and definitely the best food and service - friendly, efficient and high quality. It is getting to be our regular spot now.
As someone who has spent a lot of time in many jazz clubs in NYC and elsewhere, I was eager to visit Pocket. Overall, the venue did not disappoint except for one major deficiency noted later. It is in the basement of a large Times Square area hotel, so one would expect an upscale venue and I was not disappointed. The room is very comfortable and pleasantly appointed. (The days of the seedy jazz club as hip are long over though some club owners in town have yet to get the memo.) The major negative: the women's restroom was clean but -- shockingly -- has only two commodes, which for a 170 (or so) seat venue is entirely unsatisfactory. (I deducted a star from 'Atmosphere' because of this condition and gave an overall rating of only three because of this), which will inevitably cause trouble for the owners at some point.) As for food, I am sorry to say it is as mediocre as that served as Jazz Standard back in the day. Bluntly, Jazz Standard (Smoke was the name of its restaurant) never offered good barbecue. (I well remember the late, legendary guitarist Russell Malone remarking he despised the ribs and other bbq). I had the chicken wings and they lacked flavor, just as those served at Jazz Standard/Smoke did. On the whole, given the fantastic band and the comfort of the club itself, the experience was satisfactory. If the owners finally hire chefs who can cook and solve the ladies' restroom issue (not kidding: I don't think the health department should have issued a permit given the size of the venue) the club could be among the best in NYC (e.g., up there with Dizzy's and Birdland).
