American Dream Bed and Breakfast
New York
Recensioni
In a great location and has good rates. It is easy to walk to the subway to get around NYC from here. This isn’t a luxury hotel but is a nice spot to get comfortable sleep after a long day. The front desk were friendly and even had suggestions for places nearby to eat. If you have a car there are nearby parking garages as well but make sure to look at the reviews before choosing one.
Best value in NYC, and best hostel I've stayed in around the world! I don't usually leave reviews, but feels that American Dream rightly deserves another 5 star review. It's evident that lots of love and thoughtfulness go into ensuring that guests have a great stay: 1) Kitchen is well provisioned at all hours, 2) Included Breakfast serves fresh fruits daily that goes beyond the normal apple/orange/bananas (Cherries, blueberries, strawberries, grapes, blackberries during our summer stay.), 3) Common area, rooms, bathrooms, showers, and sink area are all kept very clean, 4) There's even a drawer full of personal hygiene products in case you forgot your own, 5) The love also came through in the wooden world map in the kitchen, which the staff spent hours putting up piece by piece. This being in a central, bustling Gramercy area, I brought my ear plugs and an eye mask for sleeping, and I highly recommend that you do too to make this a perfect stay like mine was.
I've stayed at American Dream Bed and Breakfast twice and I enjoyed my stay every time. I paid $150 per night. The amount of services is great for a hostel, better than many cheap hotels at the same price level. The best thing about this hotel is definitely the location in the middle of Manhattan, and for the price, it's hard to beat. I loved the complementary breakfast. I don't have a problem with noises but it really depended on other guests because walls are thin. My only complaint is that you don't have anything to put your clothes/toiletries in the 2nd floor shared bathroom. I understand space is minimal there, but still, a hook or small shelf would be really nice.
This is a decent address for a few nights in NYC, as the price is genuinely competitive compared to other accommodations in Manhattan! Several different transit lines are conveniently close by, making it easy to get around the city. There are rooms in several different sizes, the staff is very kind and welcoming, and cleaning is done regularly so the cleanliness is appreciated. That said, having visited this hostel twice, 4 years apart, staying in the same room both times, here is some information to help you decide whether this place is right for you: ➡️ No windows are double-glazed, they don't close properly, and on top of that there are large AC units built into the wall — so noise gets in easily. New York being a fairly loud city, especially on weekdays, and the rooms not being very high up (3rd floor), this is a real issue. Add to that the fact that doors SLAM very loudly due to automatic door closers on every room, and guests pay absolutely no attention to this (no signage or reminders anywhere), which creates constant noise and vibrations through the walls every time a door closes. If you're sensitive to noise, avoid this hostel! You can genuinely hear everything going on... even with earplugs. To avoid street noise, you might want to request a room on the left side of the hallway when booking (away from the street side). ➡️ There are no blackout blinds — Americans aren't really familiar with this concept, which is quite useful... You'll find only small metal blinds that barely block any light, along with sheer curtains (or torn ones, like mine — unchanged for over 4 years). If you're sensitive to light, bring a sleep mask because the window coverings here simply won't cut it! ➡️ The hostel uses shared central heating over which you have zero control, and in my case it was blowing directly onto the top of the bed — right onto my head. This heating runs almost constantly, even on warm days! There's nothing to be done about it; staff cannot turn it off. Rooms get VERY hot as a result, forcing you to open the window and curtains to let in cooler air — which then adds noise and light on top of everything else 😅 I'd like to remind the management that scientists recommend a bedroom temperature of 18–20°C (64–68°F) for optimal sleep — this place is far from that. If you're sensitive to heat, I'd advise against this hostel. ➡️ Single rooms are marketed on all booking platforms, including the hostel's own website, with photos showing a bunk bed and a sink inside the room. In my experience, single rooms actually come with just one single bed and no in-room sink — which in itself isn't a dealbreaker, but feels like a deliberate omission on the hostel's part. It leaves you feeling misled, and that kind of lack of transparency is simply not a great look. ➡️ Visiting 4 years apart, I found the exact same rust stains on all the bathroom fixtures, the same torn curtains, the same broken blinds, the same mold spots in the showers/bathtubs. So it's fair to say that the price — which, while competitive, is still not cheap — doesn't appear to fund even minor maintenance or furniture replacements as things age. In short, this hostel is a convenient option at a competitive price if you want to stay in Manhattan, but I genuinely regret that no investment — even a modest one — seems to go toward guest comfort. A blind or a curtain costs under $30, which is less than a third of the price of a single night for a single guest... A small investment could make a significant difference. I slept extremely poorly throughout my entire stay and would be willing to pay more on my next trip to avoid this hostel, which is aging less and less gracefully 😞 This felt like a 3-star hostel 4 years ago — but the absence of basic improvements or small efforts to maintain and enhance the guest experience means I can only leave a 2-star review this time, sorry.
I love this place! I've stayed here three times both by myself and with a friend and it's perfect for what it is: relatively cheap for NYC private lodging, relatively close to subway stops that let you get most places, cozy atmosphere inside, free breakfast and coffee, and clean. Staff have always been nice and welcoming. I haven't made much effort to be social with other guests during my stays so I can't comment on that aspect, and the only downside is the surrounding neighboorhood is pretty dead at night, but I'd certainly recommend.
