Description

Take a walk on the wild side in Manhattan's most rebellious neighborhood- the East Village and Alphabet City. We'll visit Astor Place- where the Shakespeare riots of 1849 raged and a hundred years later, Joe Pap founded the Public Theater. We'll walk down historic St Mark's Place- an upper middle class enclave in the early 1800's and later home to punk rockers and one of New York City's most famous nightclubs. We'll visit 'Ukrainian Village,' and talk about the Immigrant experience, and how NYC's incredible diversity is EXACTLY what makes it such a thrilling place to be. We'll go to Tomkins Square Park, where the famous riots over the homeless encampment broke out in 1988, and tell the story of a once great community center in an abandoned school house forced to close when the city sold it. Every crazy thing that ever happened in this city- from riots and protests to artistic and night life innovations- happened atleast in part in the East Village, and we'll explore as many as we can in this 2 hour crash course on the REAL history of New York!
