Description

Many people have heard of the Bronx. Its history is entwined with that of the United States. The Bronx has not always had the most positive image in the media and in the 1970’s many areas were literally on fire. However, from the ashes of the 1970’s, a new Bronx has emerged offering visitors a unique culture as well as historically significant locations. This tour will meet at Grand Central where we will catch the 4 train up to 161st Street. There guests will learn about baseball in the Bronx and the importance of Yankee Stadium. We will explore the neighborhood a bit making stops at a botanica, which is a Santeria religious items shop as well the Shakespeare Ave staircase made famous by the movie, The Joker. From there we will catch the 4 train up to Fordham Rd where we will be able to visit the Grand Concourse, the Champs d’Elysees of New York. We also get a chance to visit the Fordham Rd shopping district which is the beating heart of the Bronx. Our last stop will have us take the 4 train to the very end: Woodlawn Heights. You will get an opportunity to briefly visit Woodlawn Cemetery- home to graves and mausoleums of many important Americans. We will then take a brief bus ride to the heart of Woodlawn Heights, Katonah Avenue, home of the highest Irish concentration outside of Ireland. At the end of the tour, you may want to stop by one of the Irish establishments and get a bite to eat.
